This paper discusses the condom controversy arising from Catholic policy and statements from the last two Popes, and the potential impact upon Africa and its female population. Africa has the highest rate of HIV infection in the world and over half of those infected are women. Many activists and non-governmental organisations campaign throughout Africa to advocate condom use as an HIV/AIDS prevention measure. However, the Catholic Church condemns that message and the use of condoms generally, resulting in a dangerous contradiction of messages to the public.
