This paper presents Burkina Faso’s 20-year engagement in the fight against female genital mutilation (FGM). Starting with an overview of the international and regional legislation that protects women and girls from this harmful practice, and outlining the background to FGM in the country, the paper highlights the successful interventions that Burkina Faso has implemented so far – interventions which countries worldwide could also adopt in their struggle to put an end to FGM.
