This paper presents ways in which to bridge the gap between health systems research, uptake and utilisation. Despite the role played by health systems research in improving the health outcomes of African populations, several barriers still prevail. Further, the paper highlights the importance of collaboration between health researchers and policymakers, access to information and an emphasis on the impact of donor funds on health outcomes, as opposed to a focus on outputs, aligning research priorities and tailoring research results to suit different audiences.
