WHO has recommended that countries develop antimicrobial surveillance programmes that integrate data from bacterial isolates originating from humans, food-producing animals, and retail meats. This guidance document provides the basic information that countries need to establish a programme for integrated surveillance of antimicrobial resistance, taking a step-by-step approach to designing the programme and using standardized and validated antimicrobial susceptibility testing methods and harmonized interpretative criteria.
