Looking at the concept of the “demographic dividend” – growth potential that is created by favourable shifts in the age distribution of the population – this paper discusses population figures, and different fertility scenarios for Kenya, Nigeria and Senegal. The authors argue that whilst fertility decline certainly does not guarantee future economic growth, it does pave the way for lessening the many problems that are exacerbated by having a large and rapidly growing population.
