Although abortion is legal only to save a woman’s life in Malawi, it is fairly common and often unsafe. Ipas researchers found that more than 67,000 abortions were performed in Malawi in 2009 and that more than 18,000 women were treated in health facilities for complications from abortion. Because of a restrictive abortion law, almost 70,000 women in Malawi every year are risking their health and their lives by having a clandestine abortion.
