The paper synthesizes current research and expert knowledge on the private health sector’s role in malaria surveillance. As demonstrated in this report, there is substantial awareness that private providers are already engaged in case management and response, but improved efforts to include them in formal, national processes are crucial to achieving and maintaining malaria elimination. This paper provides generalized recommendations for engaging the private sector with an understanding that the choice of strategies is nuanced and highly dependent on country and epidemiologic context.
