As surgery advocacy groups propagate the concept of global surgery, with a certain minimum number of essential operations to be available to everyone worldwide, the authors are addressing the “practice” part, developing and supporting systems that teach the optimisation of patients pre-operatively and how to manage ill patients, whether due to major injury, planned major operations or surgical sepsis. The physiological support of critically ill surgical patients makes a difference to outcomes and is an indispensable component of essential and emergency surgery in any environment. The authors trust that this book will contribute to that understanding.
