In developing countries including Nigeria, health care waste management (HCWM) has not received the attention it deserves, and as a result, hazardous medical wastes are handled and disposed of with general municipal waste – at great risk to the health of clinic service providers, environmental health officers, waste handlers, the public, and the environment. This report is a baseline assessment of sampled health facilities in Akwa Ibom, Cross River, and Rivers States, which examined the availability of sustainable infection prevention and control (IPC) and HCWM commodities, compliance with IPC and HCWM training, and the use of sustainable IPC and HCWM treatment and disposal methods.
