For more than forty years, the Special Programme for Research and Training in Tropical Diseases (TDR) has been a leader in research to address infectious diseases of poverty, and in building the capacity of institutions, individuals and communities in disease-affected countries to generate the evidence and put in place the innovations needed to improve their health. It is not sufficient to simply develop a new solution, we have learned that there is much work needed afterward to put this solution into place. We call this building the science of solutions. This requires strong local and regional capacity, so we will meld research with training and use regional centres to increase institutional strength and sustainability, while developing the skills of individuals.
