The most recent update of the South African Paediatric Hospital Level Standard Treatment Guidelines and Essential Medicines List (EDL) has been released in PDF form on the South African National Department of Health (NDOH) web site. The criteria for the selection of essential drugs for Primary Health Care in South Africa were based on the WHO guidelines for drawing up a national EDL. Essential medicines are selected with due regard to disease prevalence, evidence on efficacy and safety, and comparative cost. The implementation of the concept of essential medicines is intended to be flexible and adaptable to many different situations. It remains a national responsibility to determine which medicines are regarded as essential.
