Health services are delivered by health workers. The achievement of universal health coverage and the health-related Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) will depend substantially on improving health worker availability, accessibility, acceptability and quality. This short paper first reviews definitions of mid-level health workers. It then reviews the evidence on mid-level health workers. The authors conclude that health care provided by mid-level health workers in specific service delivery areas has been found to be as effective as care provided by physicians.
